Nanotechnology

Posted by cognoscis on 8th November 2009

The study of nanotechnology is concerned with study of material or “manufacturing and controlling matter” at nano-scale; meaning about 200 nanometer (nm) scale which is 1/1,000,000,000 times 1 metre or generally represented as 10-9 m. It basically considers the manipulation of materials at atomic and molecular level. It concerns itself on how will a material at such a small scale react, what will be its properties, what can it be used for and how can it be produced or manufactured for the use by humans (which ultimately is the cause for almost any science).

To speak of the process itself, it is very complex and technical and I will not go into the details of it. For our understanding it is crucial to note that this field is still in its infancy. Meaning, it is still under its initial development and a lot of work is being done in almost all parts of the world simultaneously. What might be the applications of such a field? Most applications are limited to the “first generation” applications where only passive nano materials are used and not actually modified ones. Such applications include, titanium dioxide in sunscreens, cosmetics and food materials, silver in food packing, disinfectants, zinc oxide in paints, varnishes and many other such applications have been found and are being commercialized.

As mentioned, Nanotech is still under development and hence, applications requiring very precise and large scale manipulations of materials at nano-scale are still under research. One of the most widely known substance that is under research is Carbon nanotubes. These are microscopic tubes made by specific arrangements of carbon atoms and have incredible strength, special electrical thermal properties. It is about 300 times stronger than steel BUT they are not yet developed at macro levels. At macro level, this might not hold true, but since these nanotubes are very light, they can be woven together into ropes and cables can be formed that will be very light and very strong. But, till now they have not been developed at macro scale. These can be used in solar cells, as electrodes in circuits or in paper batteries and in structural materials in sports gear, jets and the ever popular Space Elevator.

Second most important outcome that is desired is in the drug delivery system. Since this technology deals with controlling the material at the most fundamental level it will be really handy in controlling them so that they supply drugs to specific areas on the body and cells. In this wake nanobots or nano robots are in the making. These are the most unnerving and yet exciting concept in the nanotech. The implications of such a technology will be huge both in terms of constructive and destructive use. Some of the very first nanobots being made from the bacteria by modifying their DNA to perform some specific functions. Actual mechanical part-building has not yet been completely developed. Only small structures like pulley, lever and other small structures have been developed. On September 29, 1989 he demonstrated the ability to manipulate individual atoms with atomic-scale precision, and went on to write I-B-M with individual Xenon atoms which gave the boost to nanotech research. Future speculations include autonomous swarm of nano robotic “doctors” which will maintain the health of an individual by specifically targeting the diseased parts.

However, caution must be practiced while we develop these technology. It is widely known how Madam Curie, who discovered radioactivity and even won the Nobel Prize, died of radiation poisoning. The risks involved in this new branch are substantial and subtle. The implications are not very clear on the face of it, but can always be inferred by the mishaps that happen in the industry. The first death where nano-technology was a major cause was reported in a poorly ventilated Chinese factory where a spray paint containing nano particles was used. Over a long period of exposure, two women died due to damaged lung and failed respiratory mechanism and 5 others were hospitalized. A new study shows that nano particles can affect the cells not only directly, the nano particles can also mess with DNA on the far side of a cellular barrier, by creating signaling molecules. Of course, these can be exploited in a constructive way, but precautions have to be taken to make sure that these particles do not affect people just because necessary precautions were not taken to protect those who may be working in such environment. It is needless to say that we need to cultivate cautious approach in our further research

Top 5 sites to download and read e-books for free

Posted by abhijit on 19th September 2009

Many times in a bookstore, you think, “Alas! If only I had money to buy all those goody- goody books”. But never fear my dear, for Abhijit is here with yet another “Top sites” post. Now I cover the top websites to get your favourite books online in form of e-books for free.

Read Print- An awesome site with over 8,000 books by 3,500 authors like Agatha Christie, Julius Ceaser (Yes the same famous Julius Ceaser. I didn’t know he was an author too), Edgar Rice Burroughs, Karl Marx, O Henry, Robert Frost, William Shakespeare and many more. The site is simply awesome. It has quotes and books both available free for reading online. I never knew a better legal ebook site.

readprint

Manybooks.net – Browse through books by Authors, Titles, Categories and Languages and download them in multiple formats.

Manybooks

Classic Reader- A site containing most (infact ALL I could think of) English Classics as E-books. Books available only to read online.

Classic Reader

Scribd- A site where users upload their documents of all types. They could be e-books, Reviews, Recipes, etc. Most books are downloadable in PDF format. Some are available to buy too. Note that the uploader may have no rights to upload the book. You can read online conveniently in full screen too.

Scribd

Esnips- A website where people upload Graphics, Music, Videos and documents too. You can find most popular titles here. Search for it and search will categorize into different types. Here also, uploader may not have the rights to distribute it. Esnips Mobile is also available.

Make Invisible Folders

Posted by abhijit on 14th August 2009

You can create a completely invisible folder (not a hidden folder). COMPLETELY INVISIBLE. So invisible that if you don’t know where it is, you will never be able to find it (If you don’t make the mistake of putting it between two folders).

invisible

Follow these steps:

Go onto your desktop

Right click->Create a new folder->Rename it as:

ALT + 0160 (i.e. pressing the ALT key type 0160 from your NUMBER PAD)

The name of folder NOW would seem a space. Now press enter & then right click-> Properties->customize->change icon->next look for a blank icon and select it. Look Carefully.

DONE!!! You have successfully created an invisible folder. No one can find it (because it is not hidden) if they don’t know exactly where it is.

Note: Don’t use this to hide sensitive information. I found some hitches in it. If somebody arranges icons by name on your PC, people will see emptiness at the first slot. If you are using thumbnails view, they will see a grey empty box where the folder is. And if you refresh the location, you see the folder flashing for a few miliseconds. ONLY USE THIS FOR FUN.

Maintain and Optimize your PC

Posted by abhijit on 5th August 2009

Many people are really irritated with their PC’s performance. But it’s not the PC’s fault. It’s their fault. Had they maintained there PC from the start or even in the middle… they would have their PCs running great…sometimes even better than ones which are only a few months old. Don’t worry though. Here are some simple yet effective steps you can optimize your PC to it’s maximum.

  1. Softwares: First things first. Don’t install everything you find on the net into your PC. If you don’t like it, you remove it. And when you remove it, files get fragmented. When files get fragmented, your PC runs slow. You know how hard it is to find things at the right time in a cluttered place (like your room)? So choose your softwares with careful research. And AVOID BETA VERSIONS. They really have a tendency to fragment.
  2. Defragment your PC atleast once a month. To do this, go to Start Menu> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Defragmenter.defragmenter
  3. Themes: Never use heavy themes (like Vista theme in XP) unless you have ATLEAST 1 GB RAM.
  4. Devices: Make sure only those devices are connected which you are using.
  5. Don’t run any program after your computer starts until your Hard Drive comes to a complete stop.
  6. Virus scans are very important. Don’t wait for the Virus or Worm to crawl in your PC and get access to your system files, ruin your PC and then you start the scan…. NO! Scan ATLEAST once in 2 weeks. It is tiresome but rewarding. Keep your Antivirus up-to-date. Use Avira Antivir (Free Version available). It’s fast and effective.
  7. Disk Checkup: Check your Drives for error regularly. To do this, go to your My Computer> Right click on the drive> Properties>Tools. Check Now. Use Disk Cleanup to clean unneccessary files.Disk Check
  8. Format (reboot) your PC when it gets really slow. it is healthy in the long run too and really boosts up your PC. Don’t do it yourself if you have no experience with it. Call a proffessional or experienced person.
  9. Startup Trick: To make your WINDOWS XP startup faster, there are 2 things you can do. One, Remove your Welcome screen. To do this, follow these steps. Go to Start> Control Panel> User Accounts> Change the way users log in or log out> Uncheck “Use the welcome screen”>Apply Options. But you cannot have your programs running in your user account while the other user is working with this setting (Fast User Switiching).
  10. Startup Trick 2: Remove all icons (that we can) to make startup faster. Run “msconfig” (without quotes)> Startup Tab> Disable All> Apply.

msconfig

There is a really great software that I found for PC maintainance. And don’t worry. They didn’t pay me for this.

Glary Utilities: This is a simple software which you can use to really help your PC. It’s features are:-

gu_large

  • It’s Free of cost.
  • It fixes and cleans invalid registeries.
  • Removes Spyware and Adware.
  • Cleans up dangerous Startup Entries
  • Monitors andempties free RAM in PC.
  • Comes with inbuilt Disk Cleaner, Registry Cleaner, Program Uninstaller, File Shredder and File Undelete too.

This is a really cool app. AND I MEAN IT. Convert Files is an online converter which can be used to convert all sorts of files into different file formats. Now here’s the deal. Convert any kind of archives, documents, presentation, drawing, image, audio, video and others into different formats of their type. The full list is given on the site. All you need to do is select a file from your PC or even online the tool will recognise the file format. Then select the file format you want to convert it into. Download Youtube Videos in different formats including HD

Posted by abhijit on 24th July 2009

I was just watching Michael Jackson’s performance of famous song “Billie Jean” on Youtube in HD. And I was thinking “HD is so cool. Wish there was a way to download HD videos.”

So I found a quite a few softwares on that. But it had to be online. I hate cluttering my PC with so many useless softwares. Soon, I found a cool website to download youtube videos in different formats. Not only youtube, it supposts sites like Metacafe, facebook, MegaVideo, break.com, Spike, and Myspace.

All you need to do is go to Keep-tube.com and paste your youtube video URL there.

HD Downloader

Now you have 5 options.

  1. Download the video in the regular low quality FLV format.
  2. Download the video in the high quality FLV format.
  3. Download the video in 3GP format for your mobile phone.
  4. Download the HQ video in MP4 format.
  5. Download the video in HD (also MP4), if the video is uploaded in HD that is.

The HD video is quite a large file. Like atleast 50 mb for a music video. But the quality is awesome.

Another simple way to download the videos is just adding “keep-” before youtube.com while watching the video. You will be redirected to Keep-tube. They also have a Firefox add-on. Or, you can create a bookmark (favourites) and click on that while watching a video. It is better explained here.

Top of the Tubes

Posted by abhijit on 20th June 2009

Top of the Tubes is a great site (topofthetubes.com) to view amazing and awesome videos on the net. It displays videos from majors like Metacafe(My Fav.), YoutubeDailyMotionLiveVideo, Yahoo and eBaumsWorld. Also, there is a drop down menu on the home page where you can select from 15 websites and you can view the Director’s pickTop 20 too.

Click on any of the 2 images to enlarge.

See the featured, most popular, recently viewed, recently added videos. Also see the most watched videos of the day. What’s more? There’s a tag ‘cloud‘ for suggestions. I really like clouds. For those who don’t know, a cloud is a mixture of names (recommendation) in different sizes in a small area. In the gallery above, there is a music cloud. I’ll tell you about this one soon. Note that this cloud is not a part of “Top of The Tubes”. I gave this image just for an example. Plus, you can Signup & Subscribe to the site.

Now set up a new account in your email client:

  • Eudora
  • iPhone mail
  • Mac OS X mail
  • Mozilla Thunderbird 2.x
  • Mozilla Thunderbird 1.x
  • Outlook 2007
  • Outlook 2002 and Outlook 2003
  • Outlook express
  • Pegasus mail
  • Windows mail
  • Windows live mail

If your email program is not listed above, use these settings:

  • POP server: pop.gmail.com.
  • Port: 995.
  • Require SSL: Yes.
  • User name: your Gmail email address. Make sure your user name includes both your Gmail account name and “@gmail.com”. If your Gmail account name is “my.account”, for example, type “my.account@gmail.com” as the user name.

That is all that needs to be done. That will set up your email client to receive mails from gmail.

3) Inserting pictures into your mail directly and

not as attachment

Isnt it nice if you were able to include pictures inside your mail and write text around it? It makes your mail more appealing and nice right? This is how you can do it gmail

Requirements:

  • The image must be on a web server. That means, you cant put an image that is on your hard drive. Upload that image somewhere and then you can include it. You can try free uploading site like photoshare, imageshack, photobucket or any other such sites.
  • You must use the >>Rich formatting mode in your gmail while composing your mail. The option will be just above your editing area
  • You must use Mozilla Firefox for this. It didnt work for me in chrome.

Next, open the image that you want to iclude in your mail till you see only that image. That is, right click on it and choose view image. This will display only the image and nothing else.

  • Press ctrl+A to select all
  • Press ctrl+C to copy that image.
  • Now, go to the place where you want the picture to be present and press ctrl+V
  • If you use an image uploaded to a free image hosting service:
  • Now click the Link button in the rich-text formatting toolbar.
  • Copy and paste the image’s page address at the free image hosting service under To what URL should this link go?. If you uploaded the image to photobucket, say, you could link to “http://media.photobucket.com/image/myimage.jpg”.
  • Click OK.

Now send the mail with your personal touch to it :)

4) Add Bcc Recipients in Gmail

Bcc stands for Blind carbon copy. All the recipients that you have specified here will get a copy of the mail but they will not get all the recipients in header. Meaning, they will not now that the copy of that mail has been sent to others also

To add Bcc recipients to messages in Gmail:

  • Select Compose from the left Gmail navigation bar.
  • Type the primary recipient in the To: line.
To hide the recepients of all the addresses, you can also leave the To: field blank or enter your own Gmail address.
  • Click Add Bcc.
  • Enter all the recipients’ email addresses in the Bcc: field.
  • Continue editing your message and eventually click Send.

5) Export Your Gmail Contacts

You have accumulated your contacts from a long time. You need them at all costs and you want to save it from losing it due to any unfortunate events. Or you just wants to export these to other email accounts. Just go through these steps to do that

  • Select Contacts from the left Gmail navigation bar.
  • Now click Export at the upper right corner or in the contacts’ toolbar (using Gmail’s older version).
  • For a maximum of compatibility, select Outlook CSV.  Both Outlook CSV and Gmail CSV export all data. The Gmail format uses Unicode to preserve international characters under all circumstances, but some email programs including Outlook do not support that. Outlook CSV converts names to your default character encoding.
  • Click Export or Export Contacts.
  • Download the “gmail-to-outlook.csv” or “gmail.csv” file to your Desktop.

6) Gmail notifier – get a sound when new mail

arrives

You like to get notified by an alarm when you receive a new mail? Well, you can do that by using the application Gmail notifier application.

  • Install the Gmail notifier from the link given above
  • Select Control Panel from the Windows Start menu.
  • Choose Sounds and Audio Devices. If you can’t see this item, click Switch to Classic View in the left pane.
  • Go to the Sounds tab.
  • Select the desired sound for New Mail Notification. To disable audio notification, choose (none).
  • Click OK.

7) Using labels to the emails

One of the coolest thing about gmail is the labels. Dont get disheartened that gmail does not has good folder system. You can always use labels to categorize the mails. What more, one mail can have different labels and that will give you more control over organizing the mails.

To create a label in Gmail

  • Select Settings from the top Gmail navigation bar.
  • Go to Labels.
  • Type the desired name for the label under Create a new label
  • Click Create.

Voila. You have created your label. Now you can use this label and apply it to the mails. Now, to apply the labels, follow these steps

  • Check the message in the message list or open it.
  • Click the More Actions drop-down menu.
  • Select the desired label under Apply Label.
  • To add one more labels, repeat the above steps

To remove labels

  • Check the messages whose labels must be removed
  • Click the More Actions drop-down menu.
  • Select the desired label under Remove Label.
  • Repeat the steps to remove other labels

Now, you can customize these labels as you wish also. Yes, gmail is the best :D

Change the Label’s Color

To assign a text and background color combination to a Gmail label:

  • Make sure the Labels box is open in Gmail left column. You can expand it by clicking Labels or the rightward-pointing arrow next to it.
  • Click the color box next to the desired label.
  • Pick a text and background color combination. To make a label appear dark gray on light gray, click Remove color. See below for adding your own color combinations.

To add your own color combinations for the labels

  • Follow the Settings link.
  • Go to Labs.
  • Make sure Enable is selected for Custom Label Colors.
  • When picking a label’s color, select Add custom colors.
  • Select the desired colors for text and background.
  • Click Apply.

Done. You are now able to see your work in action. It feels good! :D

8) Organizing your contacts into different groups

The need to do it is understood. You dont send some mails to some kind of people. You want to send a report to your team members. Or, you want to have a group of your friends whom you forward mails quite often.

To create a group for list mailing from existing contacts in Gmail

  • Select Contacts from the left side navigation bar in Gmail.
  • Check all the contacts you want to add to the new list.
  • Click the Add to group … drop-down menu.
  • Select New group … from the menu. To add the selected contacts to an existing group, select it instead.
  • Type the name by which you want the new address book group to go.
  • Click OK.

To create an empty group

  • Select Contacts from the left navigation bar.
  • Go to the Groups tab.
  • Click Create Group.
  • Type the desired name of the group under Group name.
  • Enter an initial set of members under Add contacts. You can add contacts already in your Gmail address book but type fresh email addresses, too. The latter will be added to your regular address book as well.

Now you want to add new members to a group, proceed as above. To remove or edit members of a mailing list follow these steps

  • Select Contacts from the left navigation bar.
  • Go to the Groups tab.
  • Click the name of the group you want to edit.
  • Check members and choose Remove from group to delete them from the group.
  • Click on individual contacts to edit their details.

Now, you want to use this group and send the mail to everyone at once. Here is how you go about doing it

  • Create a new message.
  • Type your email address in the To: field. You can also try leaving this field blank. Gmail will send your message, but some mail servers may refuse to deliver it due to its non-conforming incompleteness.
  • Click Add Bcc.
  • Type the name of the desired group in the Bcc: field. Gmail will complete the name and append “(group)” to indicate a list. The list is automatically expanded, so you’ll see the individual group members in the Bcc: field and can add or remove individual addresses.
  • Compose the message and click Send.

:) Isnt it easy? There are tons of such stuff gmail can do. I will try to update this as soon as possible
